When the first Nutter’s store opened in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1982, they were considered to be on the leading edge of bulk and specialty food retailing. And, for those who may think that little has changed, we take you through a brief time line, which demonstrates just how dramatically Nutter’s has changed in a quarter century.
- At its birth, Nutter’s was known as Nutter’s Fruit & Nut Company and was a single store operation in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
- Jim Cranston and his partner started the business in 1982.
- Jim Cranston’s nephew, Donald Cranston, joined Nutter’s in 1984, with Lynn Cranston (Jim’s daughter) following shortly thereafter. The Cranston family, together, with a group of dedicated employees and hardworking franchise operators, began building Nutter’s as a retail group committed to providing an exciting grocery shopping experience.
- As the bulk and natural food trend evolved, these astute business people further committed to the Nutter’s philosophy, often referred to as; “Looking After You From The Inside Out”.
- Over the years, the Nutter’s name evolved too. What started as Nutter’s Fruit & Nut Company became Nutter’s Bulk and Natural Foods in 1989.
- Today, Nutter’s operates a total of 28 stores throughout Western Canada with one U.S. location in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Some of the staples you found 25 years ago are still there. Quality bulk foods, the basic ingredients of ‘home baking and cooking’ that families enjoy daily. But, you’ll find natural and organic products are a big part of every Nutter’s store today, along with Vitamins, Supplements and other healthy lifestyle products. In addition, Nutter’s has developed ongoing training programs with a view to offer ‘product knowledgeable’ staff that can assist customers in making the decisions best suited to their lifestyle.

Nutter’s also caters to those with special health and dietary requirements. Over time, Nutter’s stores have also evolved with updated interior designs. As well, all Nutter’s stores have become well known for their carefully crafted Christmas Gift Trays, long a popular personal and corporate gift during the holiday season.
In 25 years, Nutter’s has evolved a myriad of ways, but one thing has remained the same. A passion for providing the top quality bulk, natural and organic food products for the best value possible in a warm, friendly retail setting. Nutter’s store owners, managers, staff, suppliers and most importantly, our loyal customers over the past 25 years have made this a wonderful milestone and Nutter’s looks forward to serving its loyal customers for many years to come.
