The original Bach Flower Remedies are a system of 38 flower essences that are said to correct emotional imbalances, replacing negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and stress with positive emotions.

These remedies are homeopathic in nature in that the essence of the flower and its curative abilities are more closely matched with the nature of the person, the person’s characteristics, and their emotional issues than with any physical symptoms a person might be experiencing.

For instance, take a look at this excerpt from Dr. Bach’s original description of clients’ dispositions that would benefit from the use of the essence of the flower Agrimony:
"The jovial, cheerful, humorous people who love peace and are distressed by argument or quarrel, to avoid which they will agree to give up much. Though generally they have troubles and are tormented and restless and worried in mind or in body, they hide their cares behind their humor and jesting and are considered very good friends to know. They often take alcohol or drugs in excess, to stimulate them and help themselves bear their trials with cheerfulness." - Dr. Edward Bach2
A more modern description is as follows:
Agrimony is the remedy for people who keep their troubles hidden under a mask of pleasure and happiness. The archetypal Agrimony person would be the sad clown, suffering anguish inside by still the life and soul of the party. Their friends are often the last to know that anything is wrong in the Agrimony person's life. Agrimony is given to help Agrimony people to accept and come to terms with the darker side of life and their own personalities, so that they can become more rounded human beings. They will not lose their sense of humour, but they will laugh at their troubles to dispel them, rather than laughing to hide them. As a mood remedy, Agrimony helps anyone who is trying not to face a trouble and using jokes and witticisms and smiles to avoid a painful reality.3
As with homeopathic remedies, the distinctive characteristics of a client’s personality and emotional upset are first and foremost in the decision-making process when considering which remedy to prescribe.

The remedies themselves are dilutions of singular flower material, containing very minute amounts of the flower itself, blended in a 50:50 mixture of brandy and water. Because so little of the plant material is left after processing, the final product is said to simply have an “energetic signature” of the flower.

Each flower remedy can be used alone, or a mixture can be made, by a professional qualified to do so, dependant on which emotions a client is wishing to address. One popular and readily available product today is called Rescue Remedy®, a blend of the flowers Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis. It claims to be “especially beneficial when you find yourself in traumatic situations, such as, stress, emergencies, after getting bad news, before an exam or job interview and all other kind of situations where we suddenly lose balance mentally. The Essences quickly get us back in our normal balance so that we calmly can deal with any situation.” 4
