BIOFLAVONOIDS
Bioflavonoids are not true vitamins in the strictest sense of the definition but are grouped together, often referred to as vitamin P, are essential for the absorption of vitamin C and must be obtained from the diet. Athletes rely on bioflavonoids when they are injured for relief from pain, bumps and bruises. Women with excessively heavy periods may find relief from symptoms associated with prolonged bleeding by taking bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids work in partnership with vitamin C, just as calcium and magnesium work together. This partnership has an antibacterial affect on the body along with promoting circulation, stimulating bile production to help with digestion, helps in lowering cholesterol, preventing cataracts and reducing symptoms of oral herpes. Bioflavonoids, coupled with vitamin C, help protect and preserve the structure of capillaries in your body. One bioflavonoid, quercetin, may effectively treat and prevent asthma symptoms. Quercetin supplements are coupled with bromelain and vitamin C as the three work in concert with each other.
SOURCES
Peppers, buckwheat, black currants, the pith of citrus fruits, apricots, blackberries, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, oranges, plums and prunes. Herbs that contain bioflavonoids include chervil, elderberries, hawthorn berry, horsetail, rose hips and sheperd's purse.
