LEUCINE
Working in concert with isoleucine and valine, leucine is an essential amino acid that helps to protect muscle and burn visceral fat (located in the deepest layers of the body). Leucine acts as fuel, promotes healing of the bones, skin and muscle tissue, lowers blood sugar and increases growth hormone production. This trio of amino acids are an ideal supplement for those healing from surgery. Leucine breaks down and is converted to glucose and increased glucose supplies can prevent the body from zapping muscle for energy during intense workouts. When supplementing with this trio, make sure to take only the recommended amounts as over-supplementing can lead to symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and can increase amounts of ammonia in the body. Natural sources of leucine include brown rice, beans, meat, nuts, soy flour and whole wheat.
