Ever get confused or cross-eyed trying to read those symbols on the supplement bottles? Well, agonize no more because below is a short list of some typical symbols you will come across and what they mean.
ug = microgram; the written letter "u" is a latin symbol for the letter "m"
mcg = microgram; smaller than a milligram
mg = milligram
g = gram
IU = International Unit; the most popular expression of how much to take
It is generally accepted that you cannot convert mg (milligrams) or mcg (micrograms) to IU (international units). Why? Because an IU measures the potency of the drug, not its weight or mass. However, if you come across a supplement dosage expressed in mcg or ug and need to convert, using an equation of 1mcg = 3.33 IU will get you very close to where you need to be.
Vitamin and mineral dosages for seniors, children, and pregnant or nursing women should generally be recommended by a health care professional based on the needs and physical condition of the individual.
