VALINE

VALINE
Valine is central to tissue repair and is found in high concentration in muscle tissue. As it can be used as an energy source, it is vital in maintaining muscles in good condition preventing your body from breaking down your muscles as an extra source of energy when exercising. Valine has a stimulant effect and excess in the body can result in that “crawling” feeling on your skin and even hallucinations. Valine promotes normal growth, is important in the maintenance of proper nitrogen balance in the body, can transport nitrogen to parts of the body that need it, regulates blood sugar and provides the body with energy. It helps stimulate the central nervous system, and is needed for proper mental functioning. Nutritional sources of valine include cottage cheese, fish, poultry, peanuts, sesame seeds, and lentils.
FACTS ABOUT
AMINO ACIDS

Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is caused by the inability to metabolize leucine, isoleucine, and valine. The disease is so named because urine from affected people smells like maple syrup. A deficiency of valine may also affect the myelin covering of the nerves, and cause degenerative neurological conditions. However, most people do get enough from their diet if they eat a well-rounded variety of foods.
CAUTIONS
People that exercise a lot, have a low-protein diet, or are seriously trying to build muscle mass should consider valine supplementation. Supplemental L-valine should always be taken, in balanced amounts, with L-isoleucine and L-leusine. The ideal balance is 2 milligrams of leucine and valine for each 1 milligram of isoleucine. Combination supplements that provide all three may be more convenient.
