Bone is not inert scaffolding. It frames the body and shields vital organs, but it also forms blood cells, stores minerals and fat, and takes part in hormone production. That work never stops. What changes with age is how efficiently bone renews itself.
According to the Mayo Clinic, most people reach peak bone mass around age 30. Bone keeps remodelling after that, but the rebuilding process gradually falls behind the breakdown process. Women lose bone faster than men, as their bones tend to be smaller and lighter to begin with. Up to half of a woman’s total bone loss can occur in the ten years following menopause, as estrogen levels fall. Because the loss is silent, it often goes unnoticed — until a fracture occurs.
Men are not exempt: upwards of 20% of people over 50 living with osteoporosis are male, which makes osteoporosis the leading cause of age-related fragility fractures in both sexes. A practical reason to consider bone health well before symptoms appear. Supporting bone from 30, and certainly by 40, is far easier than trying to make up lost ground later.
Calcium Is Only the Starting Point
Calcium is the starting point but can’t do the job alone. Bone is a living matrix of minerals, collagen, and protein, and its health relies on many cofactors. That’s why
New Roots Herbal’s Strong Bones was developed as a synergistic 22-ingredient formula to support the development and maintenance of the skeletal system and help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Each ingredient has a job. Vitamin C works with the amino acids ʟ-lysine and ʟ-proline to support collagen production. Magnesium, in its wellabsorbed bisglycinate form, and vitamin D₃ help the body absorb calcium. Vitamin K₂, supplied as both MK‑4 and MK‑7, plays a dual role in bone building and bone preservation. Zinc, copper, and manganese are essential for bone growth and strong connective tissue, while silica-rich horsetail supports connective-tissue strength and elasticity and glucosamine contributes to healthy cartilage. Lutein, lycopene, curcumin, grape seed, and green tea extracts; folate; vitamin B₁; and methylcobalamin—the coenzyme form of vitamin B₁₂—complete the formula.
One New Roots Formula, Three Versions:
Original Strong Bones
The original is built around microcrystalline hydroxyapatite (MCHA), the same form of calcium found in human bone and the most absorbable form available for supplementation. MCHA also provides naturally occurring protein and phosphorus. New Roots Herbal sources it from pasture-fed New Zealand cattle, freeze-dries it, and guarantees it free of antibiotics, herbicides, pesticides, BSE, and recombinant bovine growth hormone. Each dose provides 3,600 mg of MCHA, delivering 900 mg of calcium, 900 mg of protein, and 450 mg of phosphorus.Strong Bones Boron-Free Formula
Boron earns its place in the original, but it can exert a mild estrogenic effect. The Boron-Free Formula was developed for people with an estrogen-dependent cancer or a family history of one. It keeps the same MCHA base, the same 900 mg of calcium, and the same amino acids and vitamins, but leaving the boron out. Anyone in this situation should still speak with a health-care practitioner before starting the use of a bone supplement.Vegetarian Strong Bones
Vegetarian Strong Bones replaces the two animal-derived ingredients. Instead of bovine MCHA, it uses tricalcium phosphate, providing 1,000 mg of elemental calcium and about 472 mg of phosphorus per nine-capsule serving. Instead of the shellfish-derived glucosamine sulfate found in the other two versions, it uses glucosamine hydrochloride from a vegetarian, shellfish-free source. It also carries more magnesium: 270 mg per serving, compared with 145 mg. The vitamins K₂ and D₃, collagen-supporting amino acids, trace minerals, and botanical extracts all carry over, including boron.
Choosing the Right One
For most adults, the original is the complete and best option. Those advised to avoid boron should choose the Boron-Free Formula. Vegetarians and anyone needing to avoid bovine or shellfish ingredients should choose Vegetarian Strong Bones. All three are fully tested in an ISO 17025–accredited laboratory for identity, purity, and potency. They are all non‑GMO and free of gluten, soy, dairy, and sugar. Take them with food, a few hours apart from other medications. They are not for use during pregnancy or breast-feeding, and anyone taking blood thinners or prescription medications should consult a health-care practitioner first. Always read the label.
Starting at 30 is ideal. Starting at 60 will still help. Bone responds to what you give it, at any age.
